A Nationwide Polio Vaccination Campaign Kicks Off in the Country

KABUL (BNA) The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan, in collaboration with international related organizations, has announced the commencement of the first national polio vaccination campaign of the year.

This nationwide initiative aims to protect over 10.72 million children under the age of five from the poliovirus, reinforcing the country’s commitment to eradicating polio.

The campaign, which began today and will run until May 2nd, 2024, seeks to reach every corner of Afghanistan, ensuring that children receive the necessary immunization against polio. However, due to heavy rainfall and cold weather, the vaccination campaign has been temporarily postponed in the provinces of Ghor, Daikundi, and Bamyan.

In addition to receiving the polio vaccine, children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years will also be provided with vitamin A supplements. These supplements are known to contribute to improved eye health, skin condition, and a strengthened immune system, promoting overall well-being among young children.

Dr. Qalandar Ebad, the Acting Minister of Public Health of Afghanistan, expressed his determination to eliminate polio from the country, emphasizing the importance of vaccination campaigns and comprehensive health services. “We are committed to eradicating polio with the support of our partners. Through widespread vaccination campaigns and accessible healthcare services, we strive to eliminate polio nationwide,” stated Dr. Ebad.

The Ministry of Public Health urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children under the age of five receive the polio vaccine, as this simple act can go a long way in safeguarding their health. Community leaders were also called upon to extend their support to vaccination teams, aiding in the successful execution of the campaign.

The national polio vaccination campaign serves as a crucial step forward in the country’s ongoing efforts to eliminate this debilitating disease entirely.
