Summer Snow Took the Lives of 12 Children in Kunar

KABUL (BNA) Local officials in Kunar province say heavy snowfall in the Dara-e-Dugal district has killed 12 children and hundreds of livestock on Wednesday night.

Officials say that health and emergency teams are dispatched to the area to help the affected people.

Last Wednesday night the heaviest snowfalls covered villages of the two southern provinces Laghman and Kunar, an unprecedented event that left many families trapped.

According to the local residents, the thickness of snowfalls in the villages in Laghman and Kunar provinces was 2.5cm.

Late spring rains are unprecedented in Afghanistan.

The rain and snowfall caused the families trapped in their houses, and cut off the public road access to people.

The provincial director of disaster management Qari Khair Mohammad Ghazi in Laghman province said to Bakhtar News Agency, that rescue teams had been dispatched to the area to save those trapped in the snow.

According to him, about 4,000-square-meter populated area is now covered by snow in Laghman and Kunar locations.

He said their teams engaged in cleaning snow from the road to rescue those who were trapped, adding later they will start delivering aid to people in need.
