Women Journalists’ Number Decreasing, CPAWJ

Kabul (BNA) A session on women’s situation in Afghanistan media was held here in Kabul by the Afghanistan Center for Protection of Afghan Women Journalists, BNA reported.
Addressing the session which was also attended by the acting minister of information and culture and deputy minister of cultural affairs Prof. Mohammad Rasoul Bawari, deputy spokesman for the president Dawa Khan Minapal and a number of media activists, Farida Nikzad chairman of the Center for Protection of Afghan Women Journalists voiced concern over decreasing number of women in media, in particular in the provinces in the past two years. She called insecurity and increasing violence the mean reasons behind decreasing number of women in media.
Meanwhile pointing to women’s important role in Media, Reza Moyeeni in charge of the reporter without border office in Afghanistan said his organization has witnessed 40 percent increase in women’s staff in last five years, where according to him 70 percent of reporter without border’s staff are women.
Independent Human Right Commission chairman Sima Samar said freedom of expression was everyone’s right, adding a society sans freedom would witness violence and discrimination. She hoped that the culture of impunity for those committing crime against journalists to be soon ended.
Hinting to importance to women journalists in the media, acting minister of information and culture Prof. Mohammad Rasould Bawari said his ministry was ready to support Afghan women journalists and spare no effort to ease the ground for their activities.
He also said Afghan media should give priority to national interests, adding freedom of expression should not harm national interests and right of the people.
