Kabul (BNA) Incumbent President, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani won a majority in September 28, 2019 presidential elections, according to a final result announced by the Independent Election Commission on Tuesday evening, five months after a contested election tainted by a low turnout and allegations of fraud by electoral bodies.
Hawa Alam Nuristani, head of the Independent Election Commission, said at a press conference that incumbent President Ghani secured 50.64 of the votes compared with 39.52 for Abdullah Abdullah.
According to IEC, President Ghani got 9,23,592 votes (50.64 percent), Dr. Abdullah Abdullah 7,20,841 votes (39.59 percent), Gulbaddin Hakmatyar 70,241 votes (3.85 percent), Rahmatullah Nabil 33,919 votes (1.86 percent), Faramarz Tamana 18,063 (0.99 percent), Sayed Noorullah Jalili 15,519 (0.85), Abdul Latif Pedram 12,608 (0.69 percent), Enayatullah Hafiz 11,375 (0.62 percent), Hakim Torsan 6,500 votes (0.36) percent, Ahmad Wali Massoud 3,942 votes (0.22 percent), Mohammad Shahab Hakimi 3,318 votes (0.18 percent), Farooq Nejrabi 1,606 votes (0.09) percent and Noor Rahman Liwal 855 votes (0.05 percent).
The Independent Election Commission (IEC) said the total turnout in the presidential election was 1.8 million, where 31.5 percent of which were women.
The final result of the presidential election came at a critical time for Afghanistan as the US and Taliban has finalized a peace deal which is expected to be signed at the end of February, but after a temporary 7-day reduction of violence that had been earlier agreed by the two sides.
