Kabul (BNA) Bamyan has gained membership of the UNESCO’s world networks’ cities, after being registered as the SAARC cultural member in 2015 and being announced the owner of eight historical sites to be included in the cultural heritages sites in 2003, an official said the other day.
Acting director of the provincial information and culture, Sayed Ahmad Hussaini Ahmad Poor told The Kabul Times that the central province, having rich historical sites, and developing literacy rate, have gained these achievements worldwide.
According to the UNESCO, cities with good level of literacy can gain membership of the organization, said the official.
“Right now up to 800 literacy centers including 20,000 men and women are active in the province with less than one million population and full of achievement province,” said Ahmad Poor who added most of boys and girls are enrolled in schools, but elderly, still illiterate have started attending literacy centers.
He said Yakawlang, with high number of aged people joining literacy centers has helped the province gain membership of the UNESCO literate cities.
The acting provincial information and culture director said his office was hardly working to introduce sports such as ski and other local arts like handicrafts, local music and register them with the UNESCO cultural cities.
According to him, 350,000 tourists have visited the Bamyan City, recently.
He said they were working on various programs in cooperation with the Ministries of Information and Culture, Rural Rehabilitation, Urban Development, the provincial municipality and other national and international institutions, to attract more tourists to provide more revenues to the government and the locals.
Taliban hardliners, used heavy explosives to destroy the two giant Bamyan Statues, after they took power, despites oppositions from the international community and organizations.
