Afghanistan Receives UNESCO’s Executive Board Membership

Kabul (BNA) Afghanistan received UNESCO’s Executive Board membership in a competitive process as a result of a constructive series of negotiations and effective efforts of the Permanent Mission in UNESCO and ISESCO, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.
“At the UNESCO’s General Conference-40th Session that started on November 12, 2019 at its Headquarters in Paris; Member States elected new members of the Executive Board for a four year term. Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was also one of the candidates for holding a seat in the institution and was able to obtain a membership at the UNESCO Executive Board in a competitive process as a result of a constructive series of negotiations and effective efforts of the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in UNESCO and ISESCO,” the ministry said in the statement. The Executive Board is one of the three main bodies of the UNESCO besides the General Conference and the Secretariat, according to the statement. The MoFA called the selection as a major achievement in terms of elevating Afghanistan’s national image and highlighting Afghanistan’s role at the decision-making level of an important UN organization. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in France and Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission in UNESCO and ISESCO congratulated Afghanistan’s membership at the UNESCO Executive Board to the leadership of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the country’s diplomatic apparatus and assures them of the mission’s effective work towards ensuring Afghanistan’s interest in France as well as UNESCO and ISESCO.
