Kabul (BNA) The Presidential Palace in a statement applauded US forces operation that led to killing of the IS so-called leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Syria.
Baghdadi has been killed in a US military raid in Syria, President Donald Trump has confirmed.
During a press conference on Sunday, US President Trump said al-Baghdadi had been “under surveillance for a couple of weeks”. According to the US President, the IS leader died after running into a tunnel in the village of Barisha where he detonated an explosive vest, killing himself and three of his children.
In the announcement, Trump thanked Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Russia and the Syrian Kurds for their cooperation.
“The Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan commends the operation in Syria and considers terrorism a joint enemy that threatening the security of the region and the whole world,” the presidential palace said in a statement.
The statement went on saying that Afghan government considers Baghdadi’s assassination as a huge blow to the Daesh terror group.
“Terrorism victimizing our innocent people on daily basis. Assassination of Baghdadi would not only help reduce terror acts in Afghanistan, but also in the whole world,” the statement added.
According to the statement, the only way forward is to collectively fight and address the ugly menace of terrorism in the world.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said al-Baghdadi’s killing “marked a turning point in our joint fight against terrorism.”
French Defense Minister Florence Parly congratulated the US but cautioned that the fight against ISIL will continue.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also said this was “an important moment,” but also warned the battle against ISIL “is not yet over.”
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on Monday the death of Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was an “important step towards peace and stability” in the Middle East.
