UNSC Extends UNAMA Mission in Afghanistan

KABUL (BNA): The United Nations Security Council voted to extend the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year.

Resolution 2727 (2024) was approved by the majority of council members, emphasizing the importance of UNAMA’s continued presence in Afghanistan.

The Council requested the UN Secretary-General to provide regular reports on the situation in Afghanistan and the performance of UNAMA.

The presence of UNAMA was described as essential by the representative of Japan, who currently holds the presidency of the Security Council in March.

This is in line with the international community’s goal of deepening interaction and building trust with the Islamic Emirate.
The Chinese representative, however, expressed concerns that the resolution does not fully reflect recent developments in Afghanistan. While acknowledging a stabilization in the overall situation in the country following the withdrawal of foreign forces, he highlighted ongoing economic challenges and terrorist threats that Afghanistan still faces.

Despite this, he expressed hope that UNAMA would continue to play an active role in promoting sustainable development, facilitating regional integration, and assisting the people of Afghanistan in building a better life.

Established in 2002 by the United Nations Security Council, UNAMA is a political mission in Afghanistan dedicated to peace and sustainable development.
