Kabul (BNA) A three-day workshop was held by Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) for a number of journalists working in government and private media organizations.
According to The Kabul Times correspondent, in opening ceremony of the workshop, head of AIHRC Sima Samar recalled of the commission’s work and said, “Freedom of speech is one of key achievements for media and the people of Afghanistan and the right has been obtained due to lots of sacrifices and we are fully supporting it as the obtained right should be used responsibly.”
In the workshop titled investigative journalism and held in AIHRC, issues as introduction of AIHRC, human rights, principles of human rights, human rights international documents and human rights conventions, peace-related report and journalism, support from media and journalists, freedom of speech in national and international laws, report-writing, eradication of violence against of women and other related issues were briefed. Meanwhile, in the three-day workshop, a series of group works have been followed by participants. Recalling of achievements in media and freedom of speech sector, participants said freedom of speech was one of key achievements in Afghanistan as various media-related laws as mass media law, law on access to information, laws on human rights, number of media organizations in Afghanistan including print media, visual media and online media, creating various media support organizations and others have been considered as big achievements in media sector.
Meanwhile, challenges facing Afghanistan media and journalists have been discussed in the workshop. Participants in the workshop enumerated the challenges as insecurity, violation of freedom of speech by a number of government individuals, un-implementation of laws towards supporting freedom of speech by government, not following of murder cases of journalists, inconsideration of the government to supporting of media and freedom of speech and others. At the end of the workshop, certificates have been granted to participants.
