Acting Minister Muttaqi Meets UN OCHA Director, Discusses Climate Crisis

KABUL(BNA): The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, in a meeting with the  Director of Operations and Advocacy of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stated that Afghanistan does not contribute to climate destruction but has been greatly affected by this phenomenon.

In a promising development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a newsletter that Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, engaged in a productive meeting with Ms.Edem Wosornu, the Director of Operations and Advocacy of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

At the outset of the discussion, Ms. Wosornu extended sincere condolences for the recent floods devastating several regions of the country and expressed the  organization’s readiness to promptly dispatch teams to the affected areas to provide assistance and support.

Additionally, she conveyed gratitude for the proactive initiatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating the establishment of a coordination committee between the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and the United Nations offices.

For his part, Amir Khan Muttaqi, extended appreciation for OCHA’s endeavors in attracting and orchestrating aid efforts. Addressing the recent floods in the country, he reiterated Afghanistan’s non-involvement in climate destruction while emphasizing its disproportionate vulnerability to its impacts.

“Afghanistan needs help as much as it has been harmed, and its position should be heard in regional international forums, accessing climate change financial resources.” He further remarked.

He emphasized that the recent catastrophic flooding demands significant assistance. Despite the efforts of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to allocate all available resources to assist affected communities, given the scale of the disaster, international organizations and relief agencies must also step up to provide support and fulfill their responsibilities.
