President Ghani Stresses Single Republican Voice in Peace Talks

Kabul (BNA) President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani spoke about peace and single republication voice in the process on Saturday evening during a meeting with elders and influential people of Kandahar, Paktia and Nangarhar zones, a presidential palace statement said yesterday.

Representing others, a number of elders and influential people from the mentioned zones spoke and while congratulating Eid al-Fitr, expressed their views on peace and consensus of people’s councils, tribes and unions for ensuring dignified peace in the country.

After listening to them and congratulating the advent of Eid al-Fitr, President Ghani, as quoted in the presidential palace statement, said that a great opportunity had arisen after the announcement of the withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan, and that the peace plan and its management were now in the hands of Afghans.

The president added that with the withdrawal of international forces, the Taliban had no excuse to continue the war and that it was time to prioritize peace with prudence, courage and bravery.

Noting that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has the strength, will and courage to make peace, President Ghani said that the Taliban must also show that they have the intention of peace, adding that there is a political consensus, stressing for a single republican voice in peace talks.

Concluding his speech, the president clarified that no peace plan or agreement is acceptable without the approval of the Loya Jirga and called on the elders to put pressure on the Taliban to sit in the Jirga to find a solution to this common pain.
