Kabul (BNA) The secretariat head of the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan Ziaulhaq Amarkhil resigned from his position on Monday.
Amarkhil rejected his involvement in election fraud and said he has resigned for the sake of the national interests. His resignation comes a day after Dr. Abdullah’s team broadcasted an audio recording claiming that Amarkhil was involved in industrial scale fraud in election runoff. However, Amarkhil rejected the accusation against him and said the tape recording is fake. He also added that he has not resigned under the pressure of anyone and called on Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) to investigate the conspiracies against him. The Independent Election Commission (IEC) Chief, Yousuf Nusitani said he was saddened by Amarkhil’s resignation and said his decision was not forced by the commission.
