WHO Identifies Tuberculosis as a Major Health Challenge in Afghanistan

KABUL (BNA): On World Tuberculosis Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted tuberculosis as a significant health challenge in Afghanistan. According to WHO’s social media post, approximately 80,000 cases of tuberculosis were reported in Afghanistan in 2023.
Out of this number, around 76,000 cases were identified as ordinary (drug-sensitive) tuberculosis, while 3,700 cases were classified as drug-resistant (emergency) tuberculosis. The WHO emphasized that tuberculosis is a preventable and treatable disease, but timely diagnosis and proper treatment are crucial to prevent fatal outcomes.
March 24th marked World Tuberculosis Day, an annual effort to raise awareness about tuberculosis and work towards eliminating this infectious disease.
