Two Afghan Prisoners Released from Guantanamo Jail and Returned to Afghanistan

KABUL (BNA): Two Afghan prisoners, Mullah Abdul Zaher Sabir and Abdul Karim, who were incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay for several years, have been returned to their home country. Their transfer to Kabul took place this morning, following the efforts of the Islamic Emirate. They were warmly received at Kabul International Airport.

Mullah Abdul Zaher Sabir, a resident of Logar province, was apprehended by US forces in 2002 and moved from Bagram prison to Guantanamo in October of the same year.

Abdul Karim, hailing from Khost province, was detained by the Pakistani government and subsequently handed over to the Americans before being transferred to Guantanamo in 2003.

Following their release from Guantanamo in 2017, Mullah Abdul Zaher Sabir and Abdul Karim were relocated to Oman, where they spent several years under surveillance. Prior to this, Basher Noorzai, an Afghan trader, was also released after a lengthy period in Guantanamo and returned to Afghanistan, thanks to the efforts of the Islamic Emirate.
