IOM Calls for Immediate Halt to Expulsion of Afghan Migrants by Host Countries

KABUL (BNA): The International Organization for Migration in its latest reports has called on host countries to immediately stop the forced expulsion of Afghan migrants.

According to the organization’s recent statistics, nearly 375,000 Afghans have returned in the past two months, primarily through the Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings from Pakistan to Afghanistan.

The report states that since Pakistan initiated the voluntary repatriation of illegal foreigners plan, applying a deadline for the voluntary return of all undocumented Afghans, the daily number of returnees at border crossings has significantly increased from two hundred to 17,000.

The International Organization for Migration and its humanitarian partners are providing a wide range of vital assistance at the border crossings between Pakistan and Afghanistan in response to the hundreds of thousands of forcibly returned Afghans.

This assistance includes shelter, water, health services, essential household items, medical care, protective services, nutrition, cash for basic needs, transportation, and food, delivered by border response teams led by the organization.

However, the organization emphasizes that individuals arriving in Afghanistan are highly vulnerable and require immediate support at the borders and in the long term in return areas.

It characterizes the situation as a significant humanitarian crisis, stressing the need for immediate assistance upon people’s arrival in their areas and their dignified return to financial resources.

Therefore, the organization reiterates its request to all countries to immediately cease the forced return of Afghan migrant nationals for both immediate and long-term durations.

Maria Mowita, the representative of the International Organization for Migration in Afghanistan, stated that the situation of deported Afghans is disheartening.

Most people said that they were compelled to leave Pakistan, leaving behind their belongings and savings.
