Human Rights Activists Asked For Not Entering Kandahar Jail

Wednesday, May 02, 2012
Kandahar (BNA) The human rights activists had been barred to enter the Kandahar central jail a move after the prisoners entered their third consecutive day of hunger strike.
On April 29, political prisoners in the jail staged a hunger strike against plans to transfer them to a prison in Kabul.
The inmates, most of them political prisoners, said they would continue their protest and stitch their lips if demands were not met. The inmates also wanted a human rights commission to visit the prison so they could voice out their problems. Prisoners said that some prisoners were in critical condition due to the hunger strike.
On the other hand, the human rights officials said that they had been trying to enter the jail since the start of the strike but failed to do so. “I discussed the issue with Governor Toryali Weesa today and he told me to go there but still our officials did not receive permission from jail officials to enter,” he added.
