Tuesday December 03, 2013
Kabul (BNA) December 3rd Coincides the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The day is marked world over to enhance cooperation and focus on the issues of the special persons so that they live in the society in a dignified manner. The three decades of war and violence which spread its darks shadow on our beloved country Afghanistan besides devastating basic infrastructures of the country also left a lot of human tragedies. The war and bloodsheds in Afghanistan massively affected the human population. Thousands resorted to migration towards the alien destinations and large number of others were disabled and confronted with other social issues including illiteracy, poverty and psychological diseases imposed on them through war trauma.
As a nation, we should realize that our special persons have sacrificed their lives for the sake of freedom of the country and to suppress the intruders and the invaders. Unfortunately, these days it seems that the disabled people are ignored in some extent in the country and it really disappointing.
The special persons need focus and support of the government, humanitarian institutions and most importantly the people of Afghanistan. Any negligence on the disabled people may cause the sense of deprivations and disappointment among them and they feel isolated from the society, it against humanitarian values. Based on the statement of officials of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Disabled and Martyrs, a number of effective plans were formulated in the past to facilitate and the in the future the disabled would receive Bank Cards while receiving their annual salaries. Statistics show that the number of disabled people has increase, 41 percent constitute the women and nearly 200,000 children with disabilities also exist in the country and they and they are also eligible to go to schools.
Afghanistan stays on top of the countries which hosts the largest number of disabled people. In recent years, special concentrations haven’t been made on the lives of the disabled people. “The government of Afghanistan must focus on creating positive environment to the disabled women Ms. Shakira who lost her one leg during the civil war.” “The government has ignored the rights of the disabled people, every day I go to bazaar by facing many difficulties to work and fulfill the necessities of my family, I don’t have that much financial capability to rent a house for them, said another disabled man Khawja Mohammad who lost his two legs during the wars.”
Undoubtedly, the disabled people constitute the needy social segment in a society and there basic humanitarian rights should be protected to avoid them feeling isolated and alone. It’s our national, religious and humanitarian obligations to focus on betterment of the disabled people in the country.
