Climate Change and Drought are Main Factors Behind Rural People’s Migration to Cities: Herat Governor

HERAT (BNA): During a meeting with the deputy representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Afghanistan, the governor of Herat province, Sheikh Mawlana Islam Jar, expressed concern about the continuous expulsion of Afghan migrants from neighboring countries.

He noted that the expulsion of migrants, particularly during the winter season, has made it difficult for those who have been forced to flee.

During the discussion, the governor of Herat also emphasized that climate change and drought had resulted in widespread migration of rural residents to Herat city, the provincial capital.

He mentioned that currently, the only challenge people face is economic hardship. Meanwhile, the deputy representative of the UNHCR stated that their support measures have increased under these circumstances, and they will continue to assist returnees and other vulnerable people.
