Kabul (BNA) Using greenhouses plantation had increased 11 percent in the southern Farah province, where an official said the move had helped poppy cultivation reduce more than 15 percent in the mostly insurgent’s under-threat province.
More than 6,000 people could also find work in the greenhouses created in some key districts of the province, as acting chief of the provincial agriculture and livestock, Eng. Abdul Manan Mateen told Media that the greenhouses were for the first time established in the province in financial cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the center and two district, of Pushtroad and Bala Bluk in 1998.
There were only 100 acres of land on which the greenhouse were built, with the umber reaching to 300 since the beginning of this year, said Mateen adding some 1,000 acres of are now being used as greenhouses in which different types of vegetables are being planted.
More than 6,000 people were helped to find employment after numerous greenhouses were created in the center and Bala Bluk, Pushtroad and Qala-e-Kah districts, said the source. “The people are now full aware of the yields enough for using at home and exporting abroad.” Eggplants, tomato, cucumber, okra and etc… are planted in the greenhouses, said the official adding farmers’ plant melon and watermelon as well.
The greenhouses yield two seasonal harvests, with summer of 40 days and winter of two months, he said adding the harvest are exported to some neighboring and regional countries like Tajikistan, Iran, Kirghizstan and Pakistan, alongside being used in some of the country’s provinces, such as Herat, Kabul and Nimroz. The greenhouses should enjoy all needed stuffs such as required light, temperatures, proper climate and earth with enough moisture.
