Government Determines To Support Media, Writers: President Ghani

Kabul (BNA) President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met a number of journalists, editor-in-chiefs of the country’s media, and representatives of the journalists’ supporting agencies, government spokespersons and writers here on the eve of Nawruz, a presidential statement said.
According to Presidential press office, the meeting which was also attended by the first lady Rula Ghani, Nader Naderi shone a light on coordination between the government and media people in the area of access to information.
On behalf of news organizations, Sharif Hassanyar said 2016 was a year full of security concerns for the people, including journalists. A number of journalists were killed and wounded in the line of duty, he lamented.
Najib Sharifi, the representative of the Committee to safety of Journalists, thanked the president for giving reporters more access to information. He also underlined the need for journalists’ security.
President Ghani while greeting the participants on the New Year, declared threats from warring factions and irresponsible gunmen to journalists were unacceptable. There was a consensus on strong action against such elements, the president added.
A sum of $10 million has been proposed to promote cultural activities and the welfare of writers, journalists and media outlets, he said, suggesting the allocation might be increased.
