“Work On Electricity Project For Southern Provinces Should Be Accelerated:” President Karzai

Kabul (BNA) President Hamid Karzai in an extraordinary meeting in presence of ministers of finance, economy and energy and water, director of Breshna Company, Us ambassador, representatives of the Asian Bank and some other donors, emphasized on acceleration of work on the Bamyan and southern provinces electricity project. 
The president reiterating on the importance of power supply projects, asked the government organs and the donors to speed up work on the electricity supplying project. 
The meeting greed that of the Kabul imported electricity, extension lines should be started to Paktia and Logar provinces during the August of 2012 and the project is completed in one year period. 
Meanwhile, discussions took place on the power supply for Bamyan, extension of power line from Kabul to Kandahar and the Kajaki power plant of Helmand and it was agreed that work on Bamyan projects and that of Kajaki plant should start this year and completed in one year period. 
In the meeting president Karzai also instructed the Afghan government organs to prepare the electricity master plan so that the respective donors and the Afghan government organs arrange their activities according to it. 
It was agreed at the meeting that the US will start work on the Kabul, Logar and Paktia electricity project during the August of current year and the project is expected to finish in August of 2013. 
Around USD 6 million has been committed for implementation of the Bamyan electricity project that would be realized through building  of two hydropower generating plants and will be financed by the Asian Development Bank, while extension of power line from Kabul to Kandahar will be facilitated by the Kabul Breshna Company with the financial support of the USAID. 
The president also emphasized on strengthening of the electricity projects and said that there should be collaboration among the Afghan government organs and the donors in upgrading the capacities of the electricity supplying projects and that pledges made towards this sector should be realized in due time.
