Wakhan; The Second National Park

Kabul (BNA) Wakhan a remote district in Northeastern Badakhshan province was natural environment for wild life, scarce animals and herbs. In the past it was hunting place of the then rulers and kings.
It located on north eastern part of the country where upper and lower Pamirs are mysteriously located which are the protected regions of our country with diverse environment capacities. Due to having of Ecosystem and particular topography, these areas are one of the unique places in the world.
Although the Pamirs are the sanctuaries of scarce native animals but beside that large number of emigrant birds and animals are also reproducing there as well. But due to carelessness to their life and their indiscriminating hunting, their lives have been overshadowed with collapse and some of them are taking refuge to other place.
The head of Badakhshan Environment Department Ghulam Nabi Sarfaraz said “Last year Wakhan was announced as the second national park. It was decided that whole the Wakhan district be announced as the national park. Studies are going on to introduce other areas as national parks as protected areas.
Talking on diversity of animals and birds in this area, Sarferaz said “Marco Polo sheep, Bakhtarian Deer, Musky Deer, Snow Leopard, Brown Bear, Buffalo totally seventeen types animals are living there plus local and emigrant birds.
During the last three decades of conflicts and crisis Marcopolo Deer was seriously jeopardizing.
The narrow valley of Wakhan corridor is another important environment on the eastern parts of Badakhshan. In 19th century it was named after “Royal Zone” and in 1970 due to accommodation of Marco Polo sheep it was chosen as national park. Colored deer, snow leopards, brown Bear, gray wolf, fox, jackal is also found there.
Wagh valley located on China border and due to impassable ways, slight information are available about it but it is a pasture and shelter for Marco Polo wild deer in spring season.
Beside this valley, there is another valley called “Tagharmansa” on China-Tajikistan borders from which in July-September Marco Polo sheep pass over.
Safrfaraz added “So far no security measures have been undertaken for construction of a hotel or accommodation of tourists there. Efforts are going on to attract local or foreign donors “According to available data’s, the area of the second national park is about 11000 (eleven thousand square meter).
