Tajik President, EU Foreign Minister Back Afghan-Led Peace Talks

Kabul (BNA) The President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, had a telephone conversation with the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon here on Thursday morning, a presidential press office statement said yesterday.
During the telephone conversation, the two leaders discussed the expansion of bilateral relations, the Afghan peace process and regional cooperation, according to the statement.
The President of Tajikistan expressed his support for the views and plans of the Government of Afghanistan in the field of regional cooperation and the peace process led and owned by Afghans.
The two presidents also stressed the need to expand economic, trade and border cooperation, and the President of Tajikistan invited President Ghani to attend the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Tajikistan.
The two sides also discussed preparations for the Heart of Asia Conference which will be held in March.
According to another statement, President Ghani spoke via telephone with Josep Borrell, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the European Union. During the telephone conversation, both sides discussed Afghanistan-EU relations and recent developments in the Afghan peace process, according to the statement.
Condemning violence in Afghanistan, EU foreign minister said that they were following the peace process closely. He added that the withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan should be based on conditions and that violence should be significantly reduced and a permanent ceasefire should be established.
