FM Atmar Stresses Importance of NATO Cooperation with Afghanistan

Kabul (BNA) Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar met with Stefano Pontecorvo, NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, on Tuesday afternoon, a MoFA statement said yesterday.

The Foreign Minister thanked NATO for its continued cooperation and commitments in Afghanistan and stressed the importance of their support for the Afghan government and security forces as well as spoke about the importance of greater coordination between Afghanistan and its international partners, including NATO, according to the statement.

Minister Atmar, as quoted in the statement, also praised NATO’s recent declaration on the Afghan peace process and welcomed recent remarks by the NATO Secretary General regarding “conditional approach” in Afghanistan.

Both sides discussed NATO Defense Ministers’ meeting, ways to continue negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban, the importance of regional diplomacy, the role of religious diplomacy in supporting the peace process, and how to coordinate more and better cooperation between NATO and Afghanistan.

NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative for Afghanistan assured FM Atmar of the organization’s continued support and cooperation with Afghanistan and the country’s security and defense forces.
