Political Process Will Be Challenged If Voter Registration Process Failed: Dr. Abdullah

Kabul (BNA) The Chief Executive of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah chaired the extraordinary meeting of the council of ministers here yesterday, a statement said.
Addressing the meeting, Dr. Abdullah hoped the voter registration process which begun last week could succeed, however he called lack of awareness the main reason behind low number of participants in the process, the statement from the Chief Executive Office said.
Expressing satisfaction over security organ’s cooperation, the Chief Executive further emphasized on the organ’s facilitating of the process to the citizens.
“Voter registration process is indeed the main principle of elections reforms and demand of the international community, political parties and people. But if we talk with the people, they still think of using their old cards in the elections,” the Chief Executive said as quoted in the statement.
He went on saying that people could attend the upcoming parliamentary and district councils’ elections if they register their names.
He said voter registration process was decided to decrease fraud and hold transparent elections.
Dr. Abdullah linked success of the upcoming elections to voter registration process, adding the political situation would be deteriorated if the process failed.
Hinting to increasing number of participants in the recent days, the Chief Executive called voter registration a national process which requires people and government sincere cooperation.
Dr. Abdullah instructed the Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology to help raise awareness on voter registration process among the people.
Meanwhile the cabinet members expressed their views on challenges before the voter registration process, the statement concluded.
