Taliban Main Obstacle Before Peace in Afghanistan: Dr. Abdullah

Kabul (BNA) Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in a meeting with US congress delegation led by Senator Jack Reed praised the country for its assistance and efforts towards Afghanistan peace process.
In the meeting, Chief Executive by briefing related to current situation in Afghanistan and the region considered holding timely and transparent presidential elections key to stability in Afghanistan.
Regarding Afghanistan peace process, the country’s chief executive said he supported US peace efforts led by the country’s special peace envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, adding that High Reconciliation Council has been formed to unify peace efforts.
He hoped that ongoing efforts would open way to intra-Afghan dialogue.
Pointing to declaration of spring operation by the Taliban group, the country’s chief executive said Taliban was still the main obstacle towards peace and misusing the process, adding that Afghans were tired of continued war and wanted peace in the country and national unity government would make use of any opportunities and efforts for maintaining peace in the country.
Chief executive stressed on protection of the country’s republic system, human and women rights and the 17 years achievements demanded by all Afghans.  In the meeting, US congress delegation by assuring of US continued support to Afghanistan said US was standing beside Afghanistan and supporting the country’s peace process.
