President Karzai Meets with US Deputy Secretary of State

Kabul (BNA) President Hamid Karzai received on Thursday William Burns, United States Deputy Secretary of State, who is in Kabul to attend the Heart of Asia Ministerial Conference. He began by congratulating President Karzai on the successful convention of the Ministerial Conference.
President Karzai spoke to the Deputy Secretary about his recent visit to China and Afghanistan’s acquiring of Observer Status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as well as the result of his bilateral talks with the leaders of the region particularly Russia and China, who affirmed their support of Afghanistan’s strategic partnership with the world including the Afghan-US Strategic Partnership Agreement.
President Karzai stressed that now that Afghanistan had secured and laid out the foundations for a stronger and continued relationship with the world, it was time to intensify its efforts to improve governance and fight corruption.
The President said he was going to hold an extraordinary meeting of the joint session of the Parliament in the coming Thursday to discuss and consult his way forward for the next two years for stronger governance and combat on corruption.
Deputy Secretary of State said the US appreciates the recent decisions and steps taken by the government of Afghanistan in addressing the issue of Kabul Bank.
