President Ghani Confers State Medals To Reporters On World Press Freedom Day

Kabul (BNA) In a gathering held to commemorate the world press freedom day and was attended by a number of the country’s journalists, the president besides congratulating the day, said that the government was committed to support freedom of expression in the country, a presidential statement said.
Speaking on the occasion, Nader Naderi the ambassador of freedom of expression spoke related to values of the freedom of press and expression in the country, adding that based on survey conducted on press freedom, Afghanistan could fulfill the requirements and made significant progress comparing to other world countries. Naderi termed the progress due to tireless efforts of the media men and women as well as the government’s continued support.
According to the statement, based on a presidential decree, 7 reporters were granted Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan and Malali medals for their efforts in delivering information as well as five others were appreciated by distributing the honorary appreciation letters.
Hinting to democracy values, the president said that today’s freedom has not been achieved easily and there were people who fought for it in the past decades, adding that it is important to further support the freedom and safeguard such an achievement.
The president also said that a supporting box would be established for journalists with representatives from open media, adding that the law on access to information and journalists’ safety would be soon drafted and to be sent for its legal process.
The president also noted that research journalism would help root-out corruption, and a special center of judicial and justice organs to be formed, so that to address the charges on administrative corruptions in the country.
Addressing the challenges ahead of the government spokespersons, the president asked them to submit their proposal to presidential palace, so that to be addressed.
