UNESCO to Resume Literacy Program in Afghanistan

KABUL(BNA) Officials of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Afghanistan say they plan to launch a literacy program in Afghanistan.

According to reports; Sarah El Attar and Parniyan Wahidi, UNESCO officials in Afghanistan, met with Mawlawi Noorullah Munir, Acting Minister of Education, to discuss the resumption of the literacy program.

The Ministry of Education said in a press release that during the meeting between the acting minister and UNESCO officials, its agreed that the technical teams of the two sides would start working on the text of the agreement and the working mechanism of the literacy program.

UNESCO’s literacy program in Afghanistan begins in a time while, according to the United Nations, the literacy rate in the country is below 50 percent and the illiteracy rate among Afghan women is higher than men.

The Ministry of Education has previously said that more than one million people have benefited from literacy programs over the past decade.
