The 1300 km long joint borders between the two countries have played appositive role in strengthening these friendly relations.
Tajikistan, has always supported the stance of Afghanistan in international association among them Shanghai Security Cooperation Organization and played an active role in anti-terrorism global campaign. These two countries during the last 12 years have designed effective plans for extending their economic and cultural relations; currently the rate of exchanging commercial goods between the countries is 20 times more than of 12 years ago.
Afghanistan is one of the countries that import electricity from Tajikistan and they are working on a plan to transmit Tajikistan electricity to Pakistan via Afghanistan.
In addition, a number of Afghan students are studying in Tajikistan’s higher education institutes.
Building a bridge on Amu River has played a significant role in providing facilities in transportation and improving of exchanging commercial goods between the two countries. The other project, which will play an important role in improvement of economic situation in the region, is construction of a railroad from Turkmenistan via Afghanistan to Tajikistan.
The completion of this project not only links the three countries but also facilitates ties among the countries of entire region. The two countries while enjoying of having great opportunities for expanding their friendly relations but there are issues, which cause the concern of Tajikistan’s authorities, such concerns are apprehensible for Afghan people and government.
Some circles consider Afghanistan as a center for spreading of instability to the Central Asian countries. Meanwhile, the continuation of narcotic drugs smuggling from Afghanistan in to those countries is a matter of concern that is suffering the people and the states of that region.
These problems emanated from foreign interference in Afghanistan and certain groups outside the borders of Afghanistan are trying by creating insecurity in parts of northern Afghanistan provide the ground for exporting terrorism and extremism to Central Asian republics among them Tajikistan. Afghanistan is in frontline of the war against terrorism and extremism and made its best to prevent the separation of this notorious phenomenon to other countries.
However, since terrorism is, a global problem Afghanistan cannot fight it alone, therefore, it requires all countries specially the countries of central Asia to join hands and eradicate this fatal phenomenon in its sanctuaries in training centers on the other side of Duran Line.
Without doubt security cooperation alongside economic and cultural cooperation will be discussed in current negotiations of Afghan and Tajikistan’s leaders and will further closers the stance of the countries on important issues of the time.
Political experts consider the 7th visit of president Karzai to Tajikistan another step toward strengthening trust between the two countries, during which three agreements on demining and providing transit facilities on two bridges recently made on Amu River which is a joint border between the two countries.    T.
