Badakhshan Landslide Kills 52, Dozens Missing

Kabul (BNA) Dozens of villagers have gone missing after a landslide in northeastern Badakhshan province.
Shah Waliullah Adib, acting governor of Badakhshan province said that landslide took place in a village of Khwahan District Monday night.
He said there were 97 homes in the village that faced the tragedy. “We have reports of 52 deaths due to the landslide so far” he added.
Searching for the bodies is still ongoing in the area.
Adib added that a number of the villagers who survived have left the area to nearby safer locations.
Adib also said that the area is remotely located about 80 kilometers from the District headquarters and because of the heavy snowfall there are difficulties in delivering the emergency assistance.
Hundreds of people lost their lives after around 300 homes were devastated due a landslide in Urgu District of Badakhshan province last year.
Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has been saddened over landslide incident in Khwahan district of Badakhshan province, resulting in killing of dozens of our countrymen.
President Ghani, who is now on a three-day official visit in India, was deeply saddened over the incident and has instructed the relevant organs to dispatch urgent aids to victims of the incident and adopt necessary measures related to saving those trapped beneath the rubbles.  The country’s President is offering deep condolence and sympathy to the victims’ families and wished them patience.
