Supreme Court Announces Resolution of Over 185,000 Civil and Criminal Cases

 

KABUL(BNA): The Supreme Court of Afghanistan has announced that in the past year, the country’s courts received over 250,000 civil and criminal cases, with 185,591 of these cases successfully resolved.

During a press briefing at the Government Media and Information Center, officials from the Supreme Court outlined key achievements and activities of the judiciary for the fiscal year 1402 under the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Mufti Atiqullah Darwish, Chief of the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court, delivered remarks on the critical role of justice in society. He emphasized that justice is the fundamental mechanism to curb disorder and injustice, ensuring the protection of the oppressed and fostering peace within the community.

He further elaborated that out of 250,762 civil and criminal cases referred to Afghanistan’s courts over the past year, 203,478 cases were filed with the Primary Courts. Of these, 151,852 cases have been resolved, while 51,626 remain under review.

Similarly, the Appellate Courts received 34,762 cases, resolving 26,870, with 7,892 still pending. The Supreme Court itself handled 12,522 cases, of which 6,869 have been settled, while 5,653 are still in progress.

Among the resolved cases, 8,005 were related to narcotics, and 3,373 pertained to women’s Sharia-based rights. Additionally, the country’s courts executed 179,818 legal documents during this period.

Mufti Darwish also highlighted that, under the directive of His Excellency the Supreme Leader of IEA, during the past year’s Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha celebrations, 2,304 prisoners were released from Afghan prisons. Another 1,920 inmates were granted sentence reductions by the relevant authorities.

It was also noted that the High Council of the Supreme Court held 38 sessions in the fiscal year 1402, during which 191 different issues were addressed, and necessary decisions were taken.
