Health Ministry Launches Second Round of National Polio Vaccination Campaign


KABUL(BNA): The Ministry of Public Health, in collaboration with relevant international organizations, has launched the second round of the national polio vaccination campaign in the country.

According to the Ministry’s statement, this round of the polio vaccination campaign will be implemented across the country over a period of 3 to 6 months in the current year 2024, aiming to vaccinate more than 11.2 million children under the age of five against the polio virus.

Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali, Acting Minister of Public Health, on the occasion of the campaign’s launch, stated that the Ministry of Public Health is committed to working with its partners to eradicate the wild poliovirus in Afghanistan.

The Acting Minister emphasized that their efforts will continue to ensure polio vaccination campaigns and health team services persist until the goal of completely eradicating polio throughout the country is achieved.

He further added that it is crucial for religious scholars, community elders, parents, and other influential individuals in society to support the vaccinators in their fight against polio to ensure the health and well-being of their children.

Polio is a viral disease that cannot be treated or cured and can only be prevented and eradicated through the polio vaccine. Children who contract this disease will either be permanently paralyzed or may even die. Currently, the spread of the poliovirus exists in the country, and the Ministry of Public Health is fully prepared to combat this virus.
